Achillea sibirica ‘Japanese Lace’ makes a stunning clump that emerges as a rosette of soft, deeply-cut, ferny-textured, fragrant foliage, expanding upward in late spring to 3′ tall x 3′ wide. This 2016 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction is from a Dr. Tom Mitchell collection near Hokkaido, Japan, which represents entirely new garden genetics in Achillea sibirica, with much more elegant foliage than the typical forms in commerce. The clumps are topped, starting in late June for us, with corymbs of light pink flowers…quite nice and always noticed by garden visitors, including butterflies and other pollinators. Not only is it attractive, but the young shoots can be cooked and eaten, while the entire plant can be used as an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory to treat ailments including stomach cramps, gum sores, and snakebites…save a trip to the pharmacy.
